THE 2016 LOS ANGELES BILLBOARD CREATIVE SHOW

In December, 45 LA billboards have been transformed into public art spaces with works from emerging and established artists including Paul McCarthy and Alex Prager.  The Billboard Creative connects artists with mass audiences on the streets of LA, and bringing art into the daily routines of tens of thousands of Angelenos.

SHOW DETAILS:

This year, TBC is honored to announce collaborations with two renowned artists: Paul McCarthy and Alex Prager. McCarthy will bring his critical analysis of mass media and consumer-driven society to the streets of LA with images from his new film “Coach Stage Stage Coach.” He is an artist who is inspired by American pop culture and often manages to whip up controversy with his larger-than-life works. Prager’s meticulous, hyperreal, film-like compositions, and fictive realities are a perfect match with the unique medium of billboards--breaking up the monotony of city thoroughfares with a refreshing dose of contemporary art.

- This year TBC has teamed up with The People Concern for a billboard created by artists living on Skid Row.  The billboard was donated by Clear Channel and The Billboard Creative with the goals of bringing public art to Skid Row, providing a larger platform for an artist from that community, and to bringing awareness to the homeless in our community. You can see the board at the intersection of 5th and San Pedro in downtown LA.

- For a mobile map to all the locations download the TBC APP from the iTunes store

Mona Kuhn is best known for her large-scale, dream-like photographs of the human form. Her work often references classical themes with a light and insightful touch. Kuhn's approach to her photography is unusual in that she usually develops close relationships with her subjects, resulting in images of remarkable naturalness and intimacy, and creating the effect of people naked but comfortable in their own skin.

Kuhn was born in São Paolo, Brazil, in 1969, of German descent. She received her BA from the Ohio State University, before furthering her studies at the San Franscisco Art Institute in 1996. She is currently an independent scholar at The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles.

Cey Adams, a New York City native, emerged from the downtown graffiti movement to exhibit alongside fellow artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. He appeared in the historic 1982 PBS documentary Style Wars which tracks subway graffiti in New York. As the Creative Director of hip hop mogul Russell Simmons’ Def Jam Recordings, he co-founded the Drawing Board, the label’s in-house visual design firm, where he created visual identities, album covers, logos, and advertising campaigns for Run DMC, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Notorious B.I.G., Maroon 5, and Jay-Z. He exhibits, lectures and teaches art workshops at institutions including: MoMA, Walker Art Center, MoCA Los Angeles, Pratt Institute, Stamford University, Howard University, Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, High Museum, Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Mount Royal University and The University of Winnipeg in Canada. He recently co-authored DEFinition: The Art and Design of Hip-Hop, published by Harper-Collins; and designed Def Jam Recordings: The First 25 Years of the Last Great Record Label, published by Rizzoli. Cey's work explores the relationship between transformation and discovery. His practice involves dismantling various imagery and paper elements to build multiple layers of color, texture, shadow, and light. Cey draws inspiration from 60's pop art, sign painting, comic books, and popular culture. His work focuses on themes including pop culture, race and gender relations, cultural and community issues.

Dee deLara is a dynamic force with an arsenal of creative skills, including: brand strategy, art direction, graphic design, art & photo curation, commercial direction and event production. Her resume includes positions as Vice President of Creative, Art Director and Designer at: Quixote Studios, Smashbox Studios, MCA Records & Def Jam Records.

Dee was the driving force behind Smashbox Studios' FACE OFF and Assistant Show competitions from 2005-2013. Dee has been a regular curator for those shows as well as for MOPLA (Month of Photography, Los Angeles). She holds a BFA from Art Center College of Design.

While editing this show, Dee's goal was to select traffic stopping imagery that would keep daily commuters interested in having a second, third and fourth look.
